Painting en plein air in Puerto Vallarta

Writer's picture: by Gaya Kairosby Gaya Kairos

En plein air, or plein-air painting, is the evocative and immersive practice of creating artwork in the open air, allowing artists to engage directly with their surroundings. This method emphasizes the importance of natural light and the ever-changing elements of the environment, which can dramatically influence the colors, shadows, and overall mood of a painting. During my time living in the vibrant coastal city of Puerto Vallarta, I seized every opportunity to embrace this artistic technique. On many occasions, I would simply grab a comfortable chair and set up my easel just around the corner from my home, capturing the essence of a quaint local street bustling with life. The sounds of laughter, the aroma of street food wafting through the air, and the sight of colorful buildings created a rich tapestry that inspired my work. I often found myself drawn to the main square, where I would sit in front of the iconic Church of Our Lady of Guadalupe, locally known as the Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe. This stunning architectural gem, with its intricate details and majestic crown, provided a breathtaking backdrop for my sketches and paintings. As a result of my dedication to plein air painting in this enchanting locale, I have amassed a diverse collection of artwork that reflects the unique charm and character of Puerto Vallarta. Each piece serves not only as a visual representation of the scenery but also as a personal memory, encapsulating the moments I spent observing the world around me. The interplay of colors and architecture come together in my work, inviting viewers to experience the magic of this coastal paradise through my eyes.
